SEO Consultant vs Agency: Which Should You Hire (and What Does It Cost)?

The short answer: an SEO consultant usually costs less and gives you senior expertise directly, while an agency gives you a bigger team and more capacity. Full-service agencies typically charge A$3,000-A$10,000+ a month, while my plans start from A$888 and can be customised to your site’s needs. Below I compare costs, who actually does the work and when an agency is the better call.

How Much Does SEO Cost? Agency vs Independent Consultant

These are typical, illustrative monthly ranges based on industry norms - not a fixed quote. Get an exact number for your site with a free audit.

Who You Hire Typical Monthly Cost Who Actually Does the Work
US / UK / AU Full-Service Agency A$3,000 – A$10,000+ Account manager + junior/mid-level execution team; senior strategist oversees several accounts at once
Local / Onshore Boutique Agency A$1,500 – A$4,000 Small mixed-seniority team; work quality depends on which staff you’re assigned
Hubert Pablo - Independent, Philippines-Based From A$888/mo AUD
Starter plan - custom plans available
Me, directly - 18+ years, no account-manager layer, no junior hand-off

Agency ranges are illustrative industry benchmarks for comparison purposes. My figure is the entry price of my Starter plan; Growth (A$1,188/mo) and Authority (A$1,688/mo) plans are also available, and any plan can be customised to your site’s needs. You’re billed in AUD - the Philippines cost-of-living advantage is mine to manage, not something you need to work around.

The gap isn’t about cutting corners. A US-based agency’s rate has to cover office overhead, multiple salaries, an account-management layer, and a profit margin stacked on top of the person actually doing your SEO. Working from the Philippines lets me charge rates that reflect Philippine living costs, while still being the same senior-level specialist who delivered SEO results for brands like Mearth, 51Talk, and William Hill - not a junior learning on your budget.

When an SEO Agency Makes More Sense

An independent consultant isn’t the right fit for everyone. An agency is usually the better call if:

You need one roof for everything

SEO, paid media, creative and dev under a single team and a single invoice.

You need 24/7, multi-timezone coverage

A dedicated pod actively working around the clock, not one specialist in one timezone.

You’re running an A$70k+/mo program

At that scale you likely need a bigger bench than one person can responsibly cover.

Decision Guide

SEO Consultant or SEO Agency: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Choose a consultant if you are a small or mid-sized Australian business spending under about A$3,000 a month on SEO and want a senior specialist doing the work. Choose an agency if you need SEO, paid ads, design and content under one contract, or your budget is well above A$5,000 a month.

Your situationBest fitWhy
Tradie or local service business (1–3 locations)ConsultantLocal SEO, Google Business Profile and suburb pages need expertise more than headcount.
Clinic, law firm or accounting practiceConsultantTrust-heavy content and local rankings reward a specialist who knows your site in depth.
Shopify or WooCommerce store, up to a few thousand productsConsultantTechnical fixes, category pages and migrations are specialist work.
Business replatforming or redesigning its siteConsultantMigrations go wrong in the details; one senior person owns the redirect map end to end.
National brand needing SEO, Google Ads, social and design togetherAgencyOne supplier coordinating several channels saves you management time.
Enterprise site with 100,000+ URLs and many marketsAgency or in-house teamVolume of work exceeds what one person can deliver each month.
Avoid These

7 Red Flags When Hiring SEO in Australia (Consultant or Agency)

  1. Guaranteed #1 rankings. Nobody controls Google. Google’s own guidance warns against anyone who guarantees rankings.
  2. 12-month lock-in contracts with no exit. A 3-month minimum is reasonable; a year with no performance clause is not.
  3. No access to your own data. You should own your Google Search Console, Analytics and Business Profile accounts.
  4. Vague monthly reports. Reports should show clicks, enquiries and the work done, not only “visibility scores”.
  5. Cheap bulk backlinks. Hundreds of links for a few hundred dollars usually means spam that can hurt your site.
  6. You never speak to the person doing the work. Common with agencies that resell offshore teams under their brand.
  7. No plan for AI search. In 2026, your provider should also cover how you appear in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT.

  2. What will you do in the first 90 days, in writing?
  3. What is the minimum term, and how do I cancel?

  6. Can you show results for a business like mine, with dates and numbers?
  7. How do you build backlinks, and can I see examples?
  8. Which metrics will you report on, and how often?
  9. How do you handle Google Business Profile and local rankings?
  10. What are you doing to get my business cited in AI answers?

Quick Answers

SEO Consultant vs Agency: Common Questions

Is it risky to hire an independent consultant instead of an agency?
No riskier than hiring any specialist directly - if anything it’s more transparent, since you’re working with the same senior person the whole time rather than being handed off to whoever an agency staffs on your account. See the case studies for the track record behind that.
How much do your SEO plans cost?
My Starter plan is A$888/month (AUD), plus a one-time A$488 setup fee. It covers rank tracking for 10 keywords, technical fixes, 3 optimised pages and 1 blog post a month, Google Business Profile and directory management, AI search optimisation and a monthly report. Growth (A$1,188/month) and Authority (A$1,688/month) plans are also available, and I can customise any plan to your site’s needs - get in touch or book a free audit and I’ll recommend the best fit.
Is there a minimum contract?
Yes, 3 months. SEO takes time to show results, so that’s the shortest period where you’ll see meaningful movement. After that it’s month to month – still well short of the 6 to 12 month contracts many agencies require.
Do I have to pay in Philippine pesos?
No. All rates are quoted and invoiced in Australian dollars (AUD). The Philippines-based cost advantage is something I manage on my end - it’s why the rate is lower, not something that changes how or what currency you pay in.
Can you handle enterprise-scale SEO alone?
For most mid-market and growth-stage sites, yes - I’ve run SEO as a Team Lead managing multi-person accounts before. For very large, multi-channel programs, see “When an Agency Might Make More Sense” above.
